About Acupuncture
Acupuncture is the practice of inserting thin needles into specific body points to improve health and well-being. It originated in China more than 2,000 years ago. American practices of acupuncture use medical traditions from China, Japan, Korea and other countries. In the United States, the best-known type involves putting hair-thin, metallic needles in your skin.
Acupuncture involves stimulating. In the past 40 years acupuncture has become a well-known, reasonably available treatment in developed and developing countries. Acupuncture is used to regulate or correct the flow of qi to restore health.
Acupuncture Points

Acupuncture points are locations on the body that are the focus of acupuncture, acupressure, sonopuncture, and laser acupuncture treatments. There are several hundred acupuncture points that are distributed along meridians (connected points across the body which effect a specific organ or other part of a person) as well as numerous other "extra points" that are not associated with a particular meridian. Most of the current research into acupuncture point locations and mechanisms is taking place in China. Traditional Chinese medicine's acupuncture theory predates use of the scientific method, and has received various criticisms based on scientific thinking. There is no known anatomical or histological basis for the existence of acupuncture points.
Front and Back points
Often points are chosen from both the front of the body and the back of the body in order to elicit balance in the acupuncture treatment. A good example of this would be the combination of a Front (Mu) point and a Back (Shu) point in the treatment of a disorder.
Upper and the Lower
Disease in the upper part of the body can be treated by selecting points in the lower part of the body, and disease in the lower part of the body can be treated by selecting points in the upper part of the body. The combination of DU 1 with DU 20 in the upper to treat prolapse of anus is one example of this type of point location.
Left and Right
Acupuncture points in the right side of the body may be selected for diseases in the left side of the body and vice versa. This type of treatment may be implemented for the purpose of balancing the energy in a meridian on different sides of the body OR in the case of head acupuncture, one side of the head may be treated to effect the opposite side of the body.
Acupuncture and Tourette Syndrome
There has been only 1 study using acupuncture to treat Tourette Syndrome which was done in 1996 by Wu, L, Li, H & Kang, L. 156 people were treated and he goes on to say that the effective rate was 92.3%. That seems amazing, but more studies need to be done.
There seems to be a few people in the forums that have benefitted from acupuncture(If you have a personal experience please post a comment below).
Personal expierence
None. But this will be the next thing I try for my 7 year old daughter if she can stand the needles. Once I start going I will post results.
