About Clonazepam (Klonopin)

Clonazepam (Klonopin) is an anti-anxiety medication in the benzodiazepine family, the same family that includes diazepam (Valium), alprazolam (Xanax), lorazepam (Ativan), flurazepam (Dalmane), and others. Clonazepam and other benzodiazepines act by enhancing the effects of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) in the brain. GABA is a neurotransmitter (a chemical that nerve cells use to communicate with each other) which inhibits many of the activities of the brain. It is believed that excessive activity in the brain may lead to anxiety or other psychiatric disorders. Clonazepam also is used to prevent certain types of seizures.Clonazepam ( Klonopin ) may also be used to treat movement disorders ( e.g., Tourette's Syndrome ).

Clonazepam is very habit forming (addictive) and may become so in only 2-4 weeks of use, causing psychological and physical dependence. It is possible to build up a tolerance for this drug and a dosage increase may be required.

Clonazepam should not be discontinued abruptly, or it could cause withdrawal symptoms including abdominal and muscle cramps, behavior disorders, convulsions, depressed feeling, hallucinations, restlessness, sleeping difficulties, and tremors.

This is a great drug for tourettes in my case. It may not work as well for others, but it has done wonders in my life.

Re: Clonazepam (Klonopin)

I have seizures as well as my legs jumping @ night. It's very painful. My Neuro placed me on Klonopin to try to help calm the constant jumping, twitching of my legs. I was on Klonopin for only 1 week. The side effects of this medicine is overwhelming. This is powerful stuff, people. I've been on all kinds of meds for my seizures; but this takes the cake. It's like living w/ 24/7 massive PMS. These are mind alternating drugs (they're supposed to be). This was like living with hecle and jekle. One minute I was sweet, the next, I was mean. I called my Neurologist that Friday and told him I wanted off Klonopin or he was gonna have to bail me out of jail. The mood swings are out of this world. I refuse to ever allow my child, who has been diagnosed with a mild case of torrettes to even try this Medication. If this medication did this to an Adult imagine what it would do to a child. Unthinkable!

Re: Clonazepam (Klonopin)

Monster56, I am curious about your experiences with Clonazepam. How long have you been using it for? Did you ever have to up the dosage?

It was also a fantastic solution for my tics/tourettes, which had previously plagued me for over 15 years without medical therapy. I initialy started .25mg twice a day, and eventually moved to 1mg twice a day. It completely resolved my tic/tourette symptoms for a good 3 years and resolved one of the biggest medical issues that had been plagueing me since childhood. And now, however, the tics have come back. I have heard that your body can sometimes get used to Clonazepam. I am now a little hesitant to up the dosage, as I feel that this may be a endless cycle of increasing dosage.

Monster56 or anyone else have any thoughts? Thank you!
