Types of Doctors to treat Tourette and Tic Disorders

There are a few types of doctors that are seen for Tourette Syndrome and Tic Disorders. These doctors are not always needed. I have listed below the types of doctors that are seen for treatment of Tourettes. If I have missed one please email me at michael@ihavetics.com and I will add it.

Neurologist

Most Neurologists do not have very much training in Tourette Syndrome. They usually specialize in either Epilepsy or Parkinsons Disease. Neurologists can use MRI’s, CT Scans, and EEG’s just to rule out other conditions that the vocal tics and motor tics might be coming from. In my opinion, if there is a history of Tourette Syndrome in the family then it is not crucial to see a Neurologist. In my experience it has been a complete waste of time and money

Psychiatrists

Psychiatrists are used if you want to try medication to control the tic disorder. You should research all the medication yourself before you go so you can request a medication with the least amount of side effects (like Tenex) if your Psychiatrist is not that familiar with Tourette Syndrome or tries to start you off on stronger meds.

Psychologists

The most important Type of Doctor to see when dealing with Tourette Syndrome or a tic disorder in my opinion. It is important to get a good one though. They can help you to live a happy life with the disorder, by building your self esteem.
